Christmas in Poland

our Christmas

Traditionally, Advent is an important season in the Polish year, with special church services, known as Roraty, being held every morning at 6am. The four Sundays of Advent are said to represent the 4,000 years of waiting for Christ. Before Advent beeswax is poured on water, and fortunes are told from the shapes which emerge.Special tasks carried out during Advent are the baking of the Christmas piernik or honey cake, and the making of Christmas decorations.

Pierniki are made in a great variety of shapes, including hearts, animals and St Nicholas figures.

Beautifully lit Christmas trees are placed in all public areas, outside churches and in homes. Traditionally the trees are decorated with shiny apples, gift walnuts, beautifully wrapped chocolate shapes and many homemade decorations and candles. On the top of the tree is a star or a glittering top piece. In many homes, sparklers are hung on the branches of the trees giving it a magical air. Sometimes the trees are left standing until February 2nd, the feast day of St Mary of the Candle of Lightning.
During Advent, the Gwiador or star carriers, used to begin wandering through the towns and villages and this would continue until Epiphany. Some of the Gwiadors sang carols, others recited verses or put on Szopi or puppet show, or herody or nativity scenes. The last two customs are developments from traditional manger scenes or Jaselka or crib.

Christmas Eve, Wigilia, is an important part of the Polish Christmas, in fact, the most important rituals are celebrated on this day.

Our Wishes for all

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
wish all

Noels Profil

Hallo an alle!

My home town by Diana Aparicio

Hello!

My name is Diana and I'm a 24-year-old girl who lives in Avilés, in Asturias and studies English at the Language School of my city.

I like to go out with my friends, read a lot and the cinema, among other things. I’ ve worked in a primary school and some days in a nursery school, but now I'm only studying.

I began to study English this year, because I like this language and I think that it is important to speak it because, nowadays, it is the most spoken language in the world, and it is necessary to talk with people from abroad and travel out of your country.

Now, I ‘ll tell you a bit about my city:
Avilés is an industrial city who grew in the last century thanks to the inmigration of people from all the places of Spain who came here to work in the factories ..
Here there are different activities to do: cinemas, a theater, shopping centres, discos, a lot of cafes and pubs, and lot of them are planned activities for young people.

If you want to visit Avilés, you will be welcome.

Best wishes,

Diana.

Iván ' s Profile ( 2ºD-NB )

Hi, everyone.
My name’s Iván, this is my first year in the Official School of Languages.
I work in Avilés, but I live in Candás and I’m going to tell you about it.
Candás is a small village in the north of Asturias, Spain, which has a fishing port, several small and very calm seaside corners and fantastic scenic viewpoints.
The fishing port dates from the 17th century but it was rebuilt several times. You can eat seafood at the fishing port’s restaurants and also walk alog a new seafront along the coast.
The most important monument is San Felix’ Church, which in spite of being destroyed during the civil war still keeps remains from the 10th century.
In the summer, it is very lively and you can enjoy the Sardina’s fiesta on the first of august. People eat sardines at the fishing port and drink cider. They wear the traditional clothes, which are blue trousers, a white t-shirt, blue espadrilles, a beret and a neckerchief.
In the middle of september we have the last fiesta of the summer, Sto. Cristo’s festivity ( in the honor of Jesus Christ) , which is very popular too.
We are looking forward to your visit,

bye.

Rocío ' s Profile ( 2ºD-NB )

My name's Rocio, I'm 24 years old, I'm Spanish and last Summer I finished my studies at University, I'm a lawyer.
This year I have begun to study English at the Oficial School of Languages, because I think this is very important for my work, as well as for travelling to another country.
I was born and I have lived all my life in Avilés, but during my holidays, I go to a small village in Segovia, its name is Carbonero el Mayor.
Segovia is a beautiful land, where it is possible to admire the Aqueduct, monument of the 1st century and with more than 15 meters of length and the Fortress (el Alcázar), of the 12th. Also, it is possible to visit the Farm, a palace of the 18th century, which is famous for its paintings and gardens that have a great number of fountains; which work three times a year and that are impressive. I was there last summer and it was spectacular!, every year it receives nearly 15.000 visitors from all parts of Spain and from abroad.

The photo shows one of the fountains in the Farm, which is called The Frogs (Las Ranas), and its jet can come to 30 meters of height ; people like to stand below and take a shower in warm days.

With this, I’ll say goodbye and recommend everybody to visit Segovia, since you wont’ be disappointed !

My travelling profile!

I love music and I listen a great variety of music in different languages. I used to play the piano and the violin but now I don't have enough time. I like reading.

Typical Spanish omelet, by Diego Iglesias 2ºI-NI

Ingredients
1.One bottle of oil

2.Four or five potatoes. You have to peel and cut them. There are different ways to cut them. I prefer to cut them small

3.Also you can add sliced onion and pepper

4.And finally,
four or five eggs

Process

You have to heat the oil. When it’s hot, add the potatoes and the onion. Don’t cook it very fast. The more slowly you do it, the better it will taste.
Be careful, you shouldn’t fry the potatoes.
When they are
tender, you have to put them in a bowl with the beaten eggs and mix it all.
Then, you have to heat a little oil in a large skillet, and when it starts to be hot, add the mixture. This is important; you ha
ve to move the skillet to prevent sticking.
Here is the important and typical step. When potatoes start to brown, with caution, you have to put a plate on the skillet and turn it around. When you do it, you have the omelet in the plate, with the brown side up. Now, you have to fry the other part.

When it is done, you can eat it.

My team, by Jose Ignacio García 1ºI-NI

Hello everybody,

My name is Nacho. I’m 29 and I’m working in a steel company, in the purchasing department. I´m living in Aviles, but I grew up in Pillarno, a village near Aviles. I have lived in Aviles since February, when I moved to a flat with my girlfriend.
What I really like most is playing football. I had never played in a serious team, only with friends. That was in this way until last year, when I joined Pillarno Football Team.
C.D. Pillarno, was founded in 1979 and disappeared in 1990. But two years ago, some friends decided to re-found the team, and they called me to play in the team.

Nowadays, I’m very happy to play in it. I recognise that going to play 100km away from your home is very hard , but to play and train with all my team-mates is something amazing.

I really think that playing in a team is a fantastic experience for everyone. You can make a lot of friends, learn to work in a team, and do the best for the group and not only for yourself. Playing in Pillarno is great.
This year we lost our first nine matches (yes, it is difficult to do it worse), but we won the last three (this is difficult too).We are in the 16th position of 18 teams. At the end of the year, we hope to be in about the 6th position.
If I were you, I’d become a fan of C.D.Pillarno. We need your
breath.
I include a link to our web site: http://deportivopillarno.com

Best regards.

I study at Virgen de la Luz Secondary School. I'm studying 1st of Bachillerato. My favourite subjects are English, Biology and Chemistry.

I'm not very tall, I have long wavy brown hair and green eyes.

My hobbies are playing the guitar and listening to music. I play the guitar and I sing in a choir. My favourite music groups are Simple Plan, No Way Out and Boys Like Girls. I also like sports. My favourite sports are football and F1 racing. I'm a Real Sporting de Gijón fan. I like reading. I'm reading a book in English called "Ohh La La! Connie Pickles" and one in Spanish called "Mensajeros de la Oscuridad"

I've been to England twice. The first one to Colchester on an exchange, I visited London and Cambridge. And the second one to London with my mother and sister. And I think that going to Germany would be a great experience. I can't wait to go there!

Paella recipe, by Alejandro Suárez 2ºI-NI

How to make paella?

Before starting, you have to know that paella is a typical Spanish dish from Valencia, a Spanish autonomous community. The paella is traditionally cooked in a "paellera" - a round flat pan with two handles. There are literally hundreds of ways to cook a paella and every cook has their own favourite recipe. Here’s my favourite one:

-INGREDIENTS:
-Rice (600g)

-1/2 chicken
-2 artichokes
-2 red peppers

-2 tomatos

-Black pepper

-Clove of garlic
-Parsley
-Saffron

-Olive oil
-1/2 lemon
-Salt

-PREPARATION:

Part 1: First of all, you have to fry the chicken with olive oil. After this, boil the chicken with 8 glasses of water. You have to boil the chicken for about ½ hour.

Part 2: Fry lightly the artichokes and the pepper and put them separately. Then, fry lightly the tomatoes and the garlic.

Part 3: After this, put the rice in with the garlic and the tomatoes.

Part 4: After boiling the chicken, add it in the frying pan with the tomatoes, the rice and the garlic (you have to do it when you are frying lightly, not after this). Then, add the others things (the artichokes, the pepper, the lemon juice, the black pepper, the salt and the saffron).

Part 5: Cook it for 20 minutes. Afterwards, let it stand for 5 minutes. Then, it is ready to eat.

My town, by Patricia Liñares 1ºL-NI

Hello!!
My name is Patricia, I’m 28 years old, I live in Asturias, which is a province in the north of Spain. Nowadays I live in Aviles, a small but charming town. It is an industrial city but the old part is lovely.
The beach is near, only four or five kilometres away. In Asturias there are lots of very beautiful beaches. One of the longest is Bayas Beach, which is two kilometres long approximately.
I work in an office in the centre of Avilés. Three days a week I go to learn English at The Official School of Languages, because that language is very important for my job, and myself.
I’m sociable and talkative I love meeting people because I think it is very important to have a social life.
I have lot of friends who I see at weekends. I like going out with them, we frequently have dinner out together, they usually eat cachopo, a typical Asturian dish, which consists of two beef steaks and in the middle thinly sliced ham and sliced cheese. But in summer we do barbecues in the country.
Not very far from our town there are high mountains where my friends go skiing but I can’t ski. I think skiing is a very difficult sport
Although Avilés is a small town, you can do lots of things here!!!!
Bye!

María ' s Profile ( 2ºD-NB )

Hi Everybody!
My name is María. I was born in Lugo, a small city in the north - west of Spain.
When I was younger I studied there and after that I worked at Cangas del Narcea's hospital for fifteen years. In Cangas I met my husband and I made a lot of friends.

Nowadays I work in Avilés and I ' m happy here because I have friends, the beach is near...
I'm going to tell you about myself. I am average height and average build. I have medium length wavy brown hair and brown eyes. I wear contact lenses but when I am at home I usually wear glasses.
I think I'm a friendly and extrovert person, but I ' m not very organised, my husband says: "You are very forgetful".
In my free time I like going out to dinner with my friends, but the thing that I like most is travelling and discovering news places. The best way to explore news places is on foot. I like going abroad in Summer because I can have a good time.
